The goal of this course is to teach you to use data science to conduct research in political science, economics, business, sociology, psychology, communications, and other social sciences. Throughout the course, you will be conducting an original research project to get a taste of what it is like to do data-driven social science research. The course will teach you how to read scientific articles from these disciplines in a way that will allow you to understand (and critique) their use of data and statistics. We will also practice conducting our own analyses similar to those used in these articles so you can develop basic statistical and programming skills to use in your research project and in future courses and jobs. Finally, in each class meeting, we will examine the ethical aspects of how social scientists are using data and explore the positive and negative implications of their discoveries.
